In this second of our series of walking tours devoted to the urban geology and architecture of Chicago, we’ll explore how titanic forces of the Earth, from Ice Age glaciers to fluctuating lake levels, have shaped the Magnificent Mile, Streeterville, the Near North Side, and the Gold Coast. And we’ll examine the materials used to construct, anchor, and ornament some of our city’s greatest landmarks that reveal a multitude of clues about the immense history of our planet and uncover the creative solutions engineers have developed to deal with the lakefront’s treacherous, oozy soils and substrates.
We’ll also discover that no other section of Chicago boasts a greater variety of exotic building stones-including those quarried on Connecticut’s Long Island Sound, the Appalachians of eastern Tennessee, France, Italy, eastern Minnesota, the shores of Lakes Superior and Erie, and the North Woods of Wisconsin. And we’ll discover that this section of the city is home to the some of the best architectural examples of our native building stone, the classic Lemont-Joliet Dolostone quarried in the Des Plaines River Valley.
Highlights of the tour include explanatory stops at the Newberry Library, Chicago Water Tower, Old Chicago Historical Society Building, the Raleigh Hotel, Holy Name and St. James Cathedrals, the Dreihaus Museum, and a number of stately stone-faced mansions in some of Chicago’s most affluent neighborhoods.
