Geography Programs for Schools

In our interconnected world, we believe that a geographically informed citizenry is of critical importance to the future of our country. And yet geography is often missing in many of Americaʼs schools. For this reason, the Geographic Society of Chicago is providing geography programs for elementary and secondary schools.

The GeoSphere (formerly called the Earth Balloon):

The GeoSphere is an extraordinarily unique learning environment. Students enter the 20ʼ inflatable globe, sit on Antarctica, and are given an unparalleled view of our planet. From within the GeoSphere, students see the world as a 360-degree panorama. Our geography specialists guide students in making discoveries about how the world works.

Spatial Requirements:

  • An indoor location with a 20' clearance in height
  • An electrical outlet within 20' of the globe base

Program Capacity:

  • Students go inside the GeoSphere one class at a time (25-30 people).
  • In a school setting, we can accommodate a maximum of 12-13 classes in a 6-hour school day.

Program Length:

  • Programs can range from 20 to 45 minutes in length, depending on a school's needs.
  • Please allow 15 minutes for set-up and take-down.

Program Benefits:

  • The GeoSphere is all-encompassing and shows natural vegetation regions, mountains, water bodies, latitude & longitude lines, plate tectonic boundaries, and city symbols.
  • We can customize programs to focus on geography, science, history, current events, math, or world cultures.
  • Different programs for each grade level are based on national standards and Illinois curricula.

By simply interacting with the Floor Map and the 50 states, students learn location, direction, scale, and distance.

Spatial Requirements:

  • A flat surface, approximately 15' x 19' in area
  • Easily fits in gyms, libraries, lobbies, and some classrooms

Program Capacity:

  • One class at a time (approximately 25 students)
  • A maximum of 12 classes can be served in a 6-hour school day.

Program Length:

  • Programs can range from 20 to 45 minutes in length, depending on a school's needs. Please allow 15 minutes for set-up and take-down.

Program Benefits:

  • Different programs are available for each grade level (K-8).
  • Our programs are in compliance with state and national geography standards.
  • Students gain vital knowledge of physical geography of the U.S. in a fun-filled and engaging experience.
