RAGBRAI, or the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, is a yearly event rife with bikes, beer and Midwestern charm. What began 49 years ago as a journalistic endeavor by John Karras and Donald Kaul from the Des Moines Register now draws folks from around the world with a record-setting 18,000 riders this past July.
Come along to learn from first-time rider Julie Watkins about the ride’s history, evolution, spirit and what exactly it takes to ride a bike across Iowa in seven days.
